Challenge Stats

The 2009 Challenge stats are in, thanks to Laura Portée, Challenge Co-Chair, who spent hours compiling them! Thank you, Laura! Overall, the stats show that the Challenge was a success, despite the back-to-back nor’easters that blew through the state that weekend.

Highlights of the stats are as follows:

1.  1,733 people started the New Jersey Lighthouse Challenge®
2.  1,359 participants completed the Challenge
3.  Participants came from 22 states, the District of Columbia and 1
     foreign country (Canada)

4.  112 participants completed the Dual Challenger (Maryland and NJ)
5.  53  participants completed the Triple Challenger (Long Island,
     Maryland, and NJ)

6.  Nearly half of the participants had participated in the Challenge
before and many heard about it through word-of-mouth or on
     the website.

We thank all those participants and volunteers who donned their
foul weather gear and made our 10th Anniversary Challenge a success!

A Note to Our Challenge Participants - Past, Present & Future
Regarding the Future of the New Jersey Lighthouse Challenge®

From the Challenge Co-Chairs, Doreen Berson and Laura Portée

Last December, we gave our resignations as Co-Chairs of the Challenge.  While it has been immensely fulfilling to coordinate the Challenge and to see and hear your enthusiasm for the event, we now have personal obligations that demand our time.  Additionally, after many years of volunteering for this event, we want to get involved in other aspects of the New Jersey Lighthouse Society (NJLHS).

In spite of advertising for a new Chair with a “Help Wanted” plea, we have not received any response. Based on this as well as the fact that it is more difficult to find volunteers (to both prepare and help out for the Challenge weekend), it was unanimously decided at the quarterly meeting of the NJLHS Board of Directors on August 8, 2009, that NJLHS will not plan a Challenge next year (2010). This does not mean that NJLHS won’t ever present the Challenge again!  It means that we’re going on hiatus to give all of the volunteers a break from Challenge preparation and the Challenge weekend routine.  This break will also (hopefully) provide the time for another person(s) to step forward to chair the event as well as determine whether the next Challenge will be in a different format in an effort to make it more appealing to those of you who have taken it year after year.

This decision makes our 10th Anniversary celebration even more special as it is possibly the last Challenge in its current format.

Thank you for your participation for each Challenge event.  Without it, the Challenge would not have achieved the success it did.  We look forward to celebrating with you this very special year of New Jersey’s Lighthouse Challenge!

Sincerely,
Doreen Berson and Laura Portée

What is the New Jersey Lighthouse Challenge® ?

The New Jersey Lighthouse Challenge® is a not-for-profit event presented by The New Jersey Lighthouse Society, Inc. for the purpose of raising public awareness of lighthouses in general and New Jersey’s lighthouses, specifically.  It is a rain or shine, two-day event held during the 3rd weekend in October when 11 land-based lighthouses and 2  Frensel lens sites are open for visitation and climbing.  During this weekend, the public is invited to visit any or all of the sites along the Challenge route.

At each site visited, participants of the Challenge receive a complimentary souvenir depicting that particular
lighthouse. Collect all 13 and you will receive a complimentary "completion" souvenir at your final stop
to commemorate your achievement.
