New Jersey Lighthouse Challenge® and NJLHS Receive Award/Grants

The New Jersey Lighthouse Society, Inc., presenters of the New Jersey Lighthouse Challenge®, are the proud recipients of a 2008 New Jersey Governor’s Excellence in Tourism Award. The award is presented to projects, activities, events, etc. who work toward a common goal of improving the New Jersey tourism product, attracting out-of-state visitors, increasing tourism expenditures, and providing healthy quality of life for our residents. Challenge Co-Chairs Doreen Berson and Laura Portée were encouraged by Barbara Steele, Ocean County’s Director of Tourism, to apply for the award, based on the success of the New Jersey Lighthouse Challenge®. They applied, and the award was presented to NJLHS and nine other organizations at the New Jersey Governor’s Conference on Tourism held in Atlantic City on April 10th.

Pictured, from left, are Atlantic City Electric President Ken Parker, a conference sponsor, Secretary of State Nina Mitchell Wells, NJ Lighthouse Challenge Co-chair Doreen Berson of Brick Township, State Tourism Representative Danny Cappello, NJ Lighthouse Society President, Yvonne Thies of Medford, State Tourism Director Nancy Byrne and New Jersey Travel Industry Association President Marilou Halvorsen.

Doreen and Laura also applied for two grants this year: Ocean County Tourism Promotional Matching Grant and New Jersey Department of State, Division of Travel and Tourism Marketing Sponsorship Grant. Both were awarded to NJLHS to be used for the 2008 New Jersey Lighthouse Challenge®!
The $1,450 Ocean County Tourism Grant will be used towards the purchase of this year’s Challenge brochures. As a requirement for receipt of the grant, we featured the Ocean County Challenge sites on the front of this year’s Challenge brochure. We thank Ocean County Tourism for their generous grant and support!

The $15,000 we received from the New Jersey Department of State, Division of Travel and Tourism will go towards advertising this year’s Challenge. We plan to expand our advertising, so look for our ad in publications such as AAA World and New Jersey Monthly. We also plan to advertise on various web sites. We thank the Division of Travel and Tourism for their continued support of the New Jersey Lighthouse Challenge®!

VOLUNTEERING -
ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A CHALLENGE?

Well, we HAVE the Challenge, THE NEW JERSEY LIGHTHOUSE CHALLENGE®, we just need YOU!

With literally THOUSANDS (YES, thousands) of visitors at the various sites on the Challenge, many hands are needed to assure these visitors have a fun experience and come away with positive feelings toward NJLHS, the sites they visit and the lighthouse community as a whole.

THAT’S where YOU come in.  Your knowledge of lighthouses, enthusiasm for the event and enjoyment in meeting and greeting those visitors is INVALUABLE to the success of the Challenge
.

While Barnegat and Tuckerton may be ‘booked’, ALL the other sites on the New Jersey Lighthouse Challenge need YOUR HELP.  There are PLENTY of sites and shifts (especially A.M.) where YOU can HELP.  Site Coordinators, as well as volunteers, are needed at the two new sites, the Barnegat and Cape May museums.

So………… Why wait for the next meeting to sign up and, possibly, missing out on the location you want.

Call me at 856 546 0514 and leave a message or e-mail me at cmagsmith@comcast.net to sign up.
